An Interesting and Somewhat Random Discussion Post

I noticed there haven't really been any discussion posts in here for a while, so I thought I'd start a topic.

A modernization of Les Miserables?

First of all, could it be done without removing the essential elements? If you were hired to write one, where would you set it? When? Would you keep a political backdrop? If so, what issues would you address? Would you alter anyone's death or survival to fit the change in time? (Say what you will about police today, but I doubt they'd gun down a little old man for planting a flag.)

I just thought this topic was interesting.
