The release of our Les Miserables 20 hour series trailer, and video of  our film & TV convention panel discussion

Over the past weekend we have been representing the series at the Optimus film and TV convention in Torquay, where we were honored to be given a half hour slot in between Game of Thrones, and Ghostbusters, which also marked the release of our promo test-footage trailer for the series!

The South Devon Players Theatre & Film company - thats us - at a big film and TV convention alongside Game of Thrones and Ghostbusters stars, as the only local or "non-famous" team there! , with our Les Miserables film series.
That's got to be a compliment! As detailed in the local press:

The Passion and the Blood: A Comparison
(Les Misérables through a lens of Trigun)

    (big spoilers for both)

In Les Misérables, the musical, the Bishop and Marius, for a time, sing the same melody, the Bishop singing early on about his hopes for Valjean's redemption and Marius, near the play's end, lamenting the deaths of all his friends on the barricade. What's the connection between these songs? Why the thematic echo?

Both songs discuss sacrifice for a noble cause. The Bishop invokes the death of Christ and other martyrs as an illustration of the tenacity of Christian commitment to redemption:

By the witness of the martyrs,
By the passion and the blood,
God has raised you out of darkness.
I have bought your soul for God.

Such great sacrifices in the name of love and kindness must, he suggests, inspire us to like acts of goodness, such as forgiving a thief by giving him the silver he stole, plus candlesticks, and inviting him to use it to start a new chapter in his life.Read more... )

Behind the scenes filming promos and trailer for the 20-hour Les Miserables film series that I am producing with my period-drama secialist theatre and film company

We had a fantastic weekend filming for the trailer in Dartmouth and Plymouth for scenes with Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Marius and Cosette. Despite the very early morning starts that come with filming, and the fact we were filming in two towns, we had a fantastic time, supported by amazing local actors, and crew members. It is so exciting to see the series trailer coming together bit by bit, supported by an amazing cast. :) The next shoot is next Saturday, in Brixham Museum, and in Stoke Fleming.

Meantime, I grabbed some photos behind the scenes!

EDIT - And we have started a behind-the-scenes youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjNo_NJXQ6Nmj4Xq1ZjPl6y1TTy2eI7xF

(dont forget we are looking for supporting cast for the full series which commences filming around Devon and Cornwall at the end of the summer, see our site at www.southdevonplayers.com and hit the Les Mis tab) )

So, basically our theatre company (its a non-profit group with a difference) had a roaring success with a non-musical stage adaptation of Les Mis (that we wrote) - we did our initial show run, and then ended up getting funding from London, to do a second run, and things went from strength to strength.

Then, last winter, some of our members and key people involved in the stage show, started talking about a film. As I have two (long disused, I dived headlong into theatre instead) degrees in film and TV production, and am an unabashed Les Mis addict (and the director of the stage show), I got hauled in. (okay, I would have been very annoyed if I wasn't, hehe). What we decided pretty early is that there is absolutely no point in doing yet another Les Misérables feature film. There are half a million already out there. What instead made a lot more sense is the fact that the whole book, has never been dramatised. Every single stage / feature film adaptation has to miss stuff out. So, we developed the plan to make an internet film series (well, at the minimum it will be available globally on Youtube, Vimeo and similar platforms, though we have already got a TV broadcast company making tentative inquiries as well, so you never know)
The plan is to crowdfund the series, but what we have also discovered is that very few people have believed that the project is a serious plan. We advertised castings, had hundreds of people say they were attending, and then over 90% no-shows on the day, and when followed up, feedback was they thought the casting would be a joke, and were amazed to hear it had actually taken place!!!!!! Some then begged for roles without auditioning (Sorry!)

We hoped to have the whole thing cast by the end of the summer, and to have filmed the promo trailer, which introduces the visuals, main cast members, and some of the locations, last month. As it is, with delays caused by casting it, we have only just cast the main characters whom we want for the trailer, a week ago, which is now pushed back to filming in the early Spring.
In a way, this is good. This is letting the two of us who are funding the filming of the trailer, hit ebay, selling stuff to fundraise for the trailer. We have a huge load of stunning costumes already, both saved from the stage show, and bought from a theatre period costume clearance sale in October.
Once we have the trailer (to prove it is serious!) then we will go ahead with the crowdfunding.

If you want to get involved, there will be several ways. Helping with the crowdfunding, when that is set up, is one way. You could come and be an extra or even a supporting actor with some lines, in the series, and we will have sponsored events, carnival entries, and themed-events, to fundraise and publicize the project - which will be posted here and on our social networks.

    audition poster

Following the success and London sponsorship of our 2013 production of Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean, several of our members have decided to collaborate on an crowdfunded internet film series based on the unabridged novel by Victor Hugo, in episodes of an hour each to be released for worldwide online viewing.

This is a long term project but we intend to begin filming for Episode 1: Favrolles, telling of how the main character Jean Valjean ended up in prison, by the end of 2014, and again, are seeking a full cast for this production, with most roles open for casting, including for characters not usually seen in stage or feature film dramatisations where the storyline is significantly condensed.

*if you cannot make this date, but wish to make an appointment to be auditioned on an alternative date please contact us, the same rules of auditioning will apply*
    OPEN AUDITIONS 11-6pm at

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

In a nutshell, this is a long term crowdfunded internet film series, to be broadcast on Youtube and Vimeo, (and any other film or video sites chosen!) starting shooting by the end of 2014.

Overall, this is a three year project, with filming taking place for each crowdfunded episode, over a few days, after funding has been raised. During filming days, shoots could be an early start to late finish, and for relevant characters also include night-time shoots. A lot of locations will be in and around Devon and Cornwall in the UK, some locations in France, especially for later episodes, will be looked into as well.

This is a pretty different project, as it is based on Victor Hugo's UNABRIDGED novel (this is not the musical or a single feature film!) and we are remaining as faithful to that unabridged novel as is possible.

Back in the summer I posted about the production of Les Miserables - a new, non-musical production I wrote from the unabridged book, and directed... I havent updated with the latest as I have been swamped up to the eyeballs with good things happening from it.
During the main show run in September, a chap from London came to see it, and was so blown away by it, he instantly, 24 hours later had emailed me to offer us sponsorship to do the show again in a bigger professional theatre than we could ever have afforded. Needless to say we accepted! That went even more amazingly, we now have a web-film series in the offing - shooting the pilots in Spring 2014 - follow my theatre company online website HERE and Facebook HERE, if you want to get in on that, or to follow news, as those are our main points of news release.

And here are some stills from the barricade scene of the London sponsored production of Les Miserables last month (of which I am rabidly proud since I wrote the script, and directed it, and then someone from London came and saw  our first run of it and they instantly sponsored it to go into one of the big professional theatres because they were so blown away by it, plus there is a film in the offing, plus I rabidly love all things Les Mis anyway) I have just been editing film clips (we had the show filmed) for peoples showreels, and nabbed a few screen grabs from the barricade scene of that performance while doing so..
    Not in chronological order.

Enjolras and Grantaire, in the final moments of the battle. Thats me dead in the right hand corner of the pic, lol.

The theatre production of Les Miserables that I am directing (a new non-musical one based as tightly as feasible on the unabridged book) is coming on really well - we have won a load of awards for the costuming even though it is all made from recycled things got via charity shops and Freecycle.

Shows only a month away! eeep!
And in the interim it looks as if we may have a national TV channel crew coming to film one of our rehearsals.

    nailbite nailbite nailbite...
