Character in the novel you most want to smack?

Marius, hands-down.

I've been having a bit of childish fun plugging characters' names into this French version of the white pages:

Oh, when reading the novel, I do recall almost throwing it on more than one occasion due to Marius. The whole ending...I kept wondering if maybe Hugo would change the entire work for me and kill off Marius instead. I also wanted Cosette to just smack him. I'm not a Marius fan at all. It's late...so I'm sadly not more eloquent. But I had to get out my Marius hate.

I have to say Cosette--she's necessary, but fairly uninteresting to me.

The musical was a vast improvement upon his character. I actually like him reasonably well there.

Darn! Auntie G was already taken! Well, the grandfather also. He's very smackable. When he keeps talking and talking in one incredibly long, unbroken sentence while Marius is recovering.

Oh no. That would only lead to areas of badness. On the positive we must focus.

Oh I couldn't agree more. I cannot. CANNOT stand Marius in the book. He's either annoyingly happy or super emo. Musical Marius is much better.
