"'We shall hold fast for as long as there is breath. We shall endure for as long as there is hope,' he promises in a voice fairer than gold and brighter than glory. 'Damn,' she sighs, 'there goes my weekend.'" The revolution lasts longer than expected, and Enjolras and Éponine go a little stir-crazy at the barricade.

I'm new to this community, so mods feel free to delete this if it's not allowed.
I'm currently mid-Brick but I don't feel like I have the best grasp on the individual Amis. For a fic, I'm wondering which Ami (besides Enjolras) would be most likely to tell Grantaire to turn his life around and stop being a miserable drunk etc. Preferably a character who would be a bit blunt about it, or at least not initially super kind and gentle and "understanding."

I hope this is an acceptable post--if not, I'll take it down.

A lot of the resurgence of Les Miz fandom has been on Tumblr, which is cool, but there are still a bunch of fans on LJ and Dreamwidth. I thought it would be nice if we could find each other more easily, so to that ends, I started a friending meme:

According to this interview with Tom Hooper, his original director's cut of Les Miserables was about three hours. He had to cut approximately twenty minutes out for cinemas. He may release an extended edition, restoring 20-22 minutes "[i]f there’s interest in the community of fans of the musical."

For what it's worth, there's an internet petition, currently with 2,524 signatures. Their goal is to reach 3,000 signatures. I realize that most internet petition disappear into the ether, but it can't hurt! I certainly could watch *that cast* play *these characters* for another 22 minutes! I even signed my real name, not a screenname.

It may also be worthwhile to send mailings to:

Working Title Films
26 Aybrook St
London W1U 4AN
England

and/or

Cameron Mackintosh Ltd
1-2 Bedford Sq
London WC1B 3RB
England

(At least, according to the United States Postal Service website, mailings to London should be addressed to "England," not UK. I do not know about other countries' coding. Obviously, if you live there, you don't have to worry about international addressing.)

I remember from various "Save Our Show" campaigns that people suggested sending postcards with pictures of where you live, instead of letters, because (1) that immediately showed the geographic range of support; (2) postcards are less expensive; and (3) no one in the offices will be afraid you sent an envelope full of anthrax.

On a different note, does anybody have any Les Mis fanworks recs? Art? Fic? Mixes? Vids? Anything?

This is such a rare but long-lasting fandom, that my normal avenues of finding fanwork recs are not helpful. I know of four fanfics I'd suggest to anyone:

God and Chance by faviconBeth Winter / [livejournal.com profile] bwinter (General Audiences) - Beautiful AU where Fantine survives. This fanfic's pairing (Valjean/Fantine) should not work at all, but faviconBeth Winter makes them convincing.

Nunquam Erit by Kang Xiu (K+) - Five Things that Never Happened to Cosette

as well as two unrelated yet similarly named hilarious crack!fic crossovers with The Phantom of the Opera, Happy Ending by Tam Lynne (K), and The Happy Ending Stealers by [livejournal.com profile] elyse24601 (K+).

Is there anything else? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I am directing a straight-play adaptation of Les Miserables for a community theatre group that I helped found, this summer, and just wanted a few thoughts. We have one evening and one weekend afternoon, per week to rehearse at our local community centre.
Granted, I have been in a production of Les Mis myself a few years ago, but as a performer only, and so I was not then involved in the more administrative decisions. I decided to ask here, as here, people know the general storyline, so I don't have to write 10 paragraphs, explaining!
My biggest concern is the content of the show, and the fact we will have two child actors, playing Little Cosette and Gavroche., who will be present, due to time and rehearsal venue constraints, when scenes like Fantine being a prostitute, etc are rehearsed. Nothing graphic is shown, but of course it does involve the scenes of Fantine and other tarts soliciting, etc.
The same with the revolution scenes, which are due to be rather action-packed. We are in a rather fuddy-duddy little town, and granted, not all parents will know Les Mis, or would want their children seeing scenes like that... (as I know from experience, playing a wench, at, and being on the admin committee of our towns annual Pirate Festival each year, every year there are complaints about the glorification of pirates!!!!!)

Now I am hoping to cast children aged 10 - 13 for the roles, and fully intend to make the details of the show available on our website beforehand,  and while we have a theatre group rule that where children are involved, their parents attend with them; in addition to which all the group "committee" are CRB checked, but has anyone else been involved in a production of any version of Les Mis and how have you worked around this concern?
Have there actually been no problems, and I am just being super-fussy?

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know about a Zazzle store I set up a while ago selling clothing, accessories and other stuff featuring quotations from Les Mis (the book). Most of the products are available in both the original French and an English translation (usually McAfee/Fahnestock), and the mugs I have designed include both languages.

The designs are entirely a result of my messing around when I had some spare time and I'm certainly no design expert, but hopefully you might enjoy some of what I've put up there. I tried to keep them light on images (with a couple of exceptions) and focus the designs instead on the words. I've used a slightly random selection of quotations - it would take a long time to go through the Brick systematically, after all. Some were ones that have stood out to me at some point in the past and others that I have found through searching particular chapters as well as simply opening the book at random. At the moment there's a relatively high concentration of barricade-related passages. What can I say? There's some good stuff there.

I created this store during a period when I had lots of spare time, and I had intended to create a full set of products for each design. However, unfortunately, real life caught up with me and so many sections are incomplete. I hope to finish this at some point, and perhaps to start on some new designs, but this can't be in the near future due to my time commitments. However, if there is a design you like and you would like to see it on a particular product, do let me know and I will be happy to create it for you.

The store can be found at www.zazzle.com/lesmisquote*, and there are also country-specific sites including:
UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, etc

The texts I've used so far are:

"Man has one tyrant, Ignorance."
(1.I.x)

"Hope: The word that the finger of God has written on the brow of everyone."
(Adapted from 1.II.vii)

"There is one spectacle greater than the sea: that is the sky.
There is one spectacle greater than the sky: that is the interior of the soul."
(1.VII.iii)

"To write the poem of the human conscience, if only of one man, even the most insignificant man, would be to swallow up all epics in a superior and definitive epic."
(1.VII.iii)

"Nothing is more dangerous than discontinued labour; it is habit lost."
(4.II.i)

"God, having made the mouse, said, "I've made a blunder.""
(5.I.ii)

"To subdue matter is the first step; to realize the ideal is the second."
(5.I.v)

"Liberty: the sovereignty of myself over myself;
Equality: the concession that each makes to all;
Fraternity: the protection of all over each."
(Adapted from 5.I.v)

"Light! Light! Everything comes from it, and everything returns to it."
(5.I.v)

"Equality is not a society of big blades of grass and little oaks."
(Slightly adapted from 5.I.v)

"Brothers, whoever dies here dies in the radiance of the future and we are entering a grave illuminated by the dawn."
(5.I.v)

"Glory to the mattress that nullifies a cannon."
(5.I.ix)

"There are people who observe the rules of honour as we observe the stars, from far off."
(5.I.xxi)

"Infallibility is not infallible."
(5.IV.i)

"There is scarcely anything else in the world but to love one another."
(5.IX.v)

And these are a sample of the designs (the design for each quote varies from product to product but remains based on the themes shown here):

I'd love it if you'd check it out. :)
